Much ado about January…

It was City WI’s first meeting of the year last Wednesday and well, what a meeting it turned out to be!

Turning up to the YMCA as usual to set up for our highly anticipated Make Do and Mend meeting, we were dismayed discover that the building had no power whatsoever. Faced with the rather disappointing options of having to cancel the meeting, reschedule or find a pub big, and empty, enough to take 40 Make Do and Mending Women’s Institute members the situation looked bleak.

Salvation, however, came in the form of that meeting’s speakers – Husqvarna Studio in Nottingham – who offered to lend us their studio for the evening. Hurrah! Following a frantic ten minutes of direction-giving and carpool-organising City WI reconvened half an hour later at Husvarna Studio on Lower Parliament Street  ready to make do and mend!

Despite the rather challenging start to the evening, I don’t think any of our members or visitors would argue against it being City WI’s best meeting yet! The lovely people at Husqvarna made us feel extremely welcome and split us into two groups – with one group working on making cute flowery little bags and the other group learning how to hem and make button holes. Working in Husqvarna’s HUGE studio space and on their extremely impressive and high tech sewing machines, City WI really were treated to something special. Husqvarna catered for everyone no matter their skills level from expert sewers to complete beginners and everything in between.

On behalf of everyone involved with City WI, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all at Husqvarna Studio for saving the day and making 32 WI ladies very, very happy indeed. You really made us feel welcome (we loved the goody bags) and treated us to a fascinating, creative and inspiring Make Do and Mend session. We hope our paths will cross again soon.

Despite the rather thrilling nature of January’s meeting, City WI hope that all will be back to normal for their February AGM meeting. Join us at the YMCA International Community Centre, Mansfield Road on Wednesday 9 February 2011, 7.30pm for a review of the previous year, a look at what’s to come and lots more.
