March meeting – Nottingham Museums talk

Thanks to everyone who joined us for City WI’s March meeting. It was our first time in Room 4 at the YMCA and well, I think we all loved having a bit more space and enough seats to go around! City WI will continue to meet in the Garden Room for the moment but we hope to move to Room 4 permanently very soon. Watch this space for more details. Hopefully we won’t have to go in search of ’emergency chairs’ much longer!

We were delighted to welcome some newcomers to our March meeting and hope that they enjoyed the evening and that they will be able to join us again in the future.

For the March meeting, City WI were joined by two lovely ladies from Nottingham Museums and their ‘pretty useful’ box. During the evening we were treated to a fascinating talk in which we learnt a lot (for instance Nottingham Museums have 5 museum sites across Nottinghamshire – can you name them? The answer’s at the bottom of this blog post!), and were given the opportunity to look at and even touch a selection of 10 beautiful 100 year old items from the ‘pretty useful’ box.

Our guests from Nottingham Museums asked us to consider what the item might be and where it came from. Whilst we may not have been too good on the geography, I think we were all pretty good detectives when it came to deciphering their use. The items included a woven cup from Africa, a Japanese smoking pipe, a fan from India and a Romanian cushion cover amongst many others.

We’d love to hear what you thought of the meeting. Let us know by posting a comment below…

City WI – March meeting

The next City WI meeting will be taking place tomorrow (Wednesday 9 March) at 7.30pm at the International Community Centre on Mansfield Road in Nottingham. Instead of our usual location of the Garden Room, we will be meeting in the larger space of Room 4.

For the meeting we will be joined by a lady from Nottingham Museums who will be talking us through some vintage craft artefacts from their collection.

Additionally, we’ll also have copies of the 2011 City WI programme available  (complete with details of the new committee who met for the first time last week and the raffle rota). As usual, we’ll also be having a raffle, refreshments and a natter.

At the meeting we’ll also be assessing interest in a group outing to see Calendar Girls at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham in July.

We’re keen to make a booking for either Tues 5/Thurs 7 July, 7.30pm. Tickets are likely to be £25.

If anyone is interested would they be able to let us know by email/at the meeting (including preferred date) and if possible bring the cash as we will need to book this as soon as possible.
