City WI Summer Fete update!

Evenin’!

Just an update on our third annual City WI summer fete which will be taking place on the 7th of July, upstairs at Cape bar in Nottingham city centre.

Fete planning is already well advanced thanks to the efforts of Leanne, and we’ll also be calling on City WI members to help make the fete a success by baking cakes and helping out on the day.

We’ll update you more and pass around a sign up sheet at the May meeting on May the 9th

See you soon!

City WI April meeting – cupcakes ahoy!

We had a great time at our April meeting on the 11th putting into practise our newly learned cupcake swirling skills! The lovely Liana from Star Bakery who produces the most amazing AND delicious cakes was kind enough to give us some pointers

Here are some pictures from the evening

Thanks again to Liana for showing us her tips and tricks!

City WI Book Club

Hi Ladies! In case you haven’t heard, I wanted to bring you up to speed with news on the inaugural meeting of the brand new City WI Book Club!

Erin and Holly have happily volunteered to run the book club for us, and the first meeting will be on April 17th at 7-9pm in the Malt Cross, Nottingham.

April’s book is The Sense of an Ending (Julian Barnes), which was the most popular choice by far. The book is available at £5 secondhand from Amazon and at £4.39 on the Kindle. Please use your local library too! As an ice breaker at April’s meeting, please can you be prepared to say a few words about your favourite book and why it is your favourite – so we can get an idea of what you like to read and also so everyone can get to know each other better. Bring a copy of it along if you can.

As well as discussing The Sense of an Ending at the meeting, we’ll also choose the venue for May and choose the next book – a list of suggestions will be brought to the meeting to get things rolling and we’d really appreciate your suggestions!

Below is a list of some questions to help get you thinking and to direct your reading – so we can have a really good discussion next month.

  • What was unique about the setting of the book and how did it enhance or take away from the story?
  • What specific themes did the author emphasise throughout the novel? What do you think he or she is trying to get across to the reader?
  • Do the characters seem real and believable? Can you relate to their predicaments? To what extent do they remind you of yourself or someone you know?
  • How do characters change or evolve throughout the course of the story? What events trigger such changes?
  • In what ways do the events in the books reveal evidence of the author’s world view?
  • Did certain parts of the book make you uncomfortable? If so, why did you feel that way? Did this lead to a new understanding or awareness of some aspect of your life you might not have thought about before?
