So long and thanks for all the cake…

The end of the Manton era was signalled on International Women’s Day, Wednesday, 8th March 2017, when after two joyous years, I stood down as President of Nottingham City WI.  It’s been a whirlwind since I took office from our incredible founder President, Kerry Edwards-Kelsall, of jam (marmalade) and Jerusalem, Suffragettes and stitching, marching and martial arts, camping and cream teas, cheese and wine (and tales of the night), books and beer, flowers and frocks, quizzes and the Queen and oodles of fabulous, inspiring women… and tea… and cake!

Nottingham City WI             Royal Birthday Card

It was  a beautiful day to end on, joining with members of City, Gedling and Netherfield WIs to present a bench to Gedling Country Park in commemoration of International Women’s Day in unison with Cllr Roxanne Ellis.  The inscription on the bench is a quotation from James Oppenheim’s poem, ‘Bread and Roses’, an anthem for women around the world “As we go marching marching, we bring the greater days, for the rising of the women means the rising of the race”.

With the WI Centenary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and being commissioned to papercut the WI’s official birthday card for Her Majesty the Queen, I’ve got closer to royalty than I could ever have anticipated!  But it is you, the ladies of Nottingham City WI and our Women’s Institute sisters around the globe who it’s been an honour to work alongside, as President.  It is to my utter delight that our new President will be the sublime Mrs Lucy Petford!  The official Presidential bell has been handed over and I’ll be her loudest cheerleader from the committee bench (you can look forward to THAT!) – good luck, lovely lady!

Sweet Treats for Autumn!

After the Quiz and Games night antics at our August meeting and the bus trip to the WI Centennial Fair, it’s time to discuss the hard stuff!  Our meeting on Wednesday, 9 September 2015, will show us how to make delicious foodie gifts!

cake pops

The wonderful Liana Stevens, local food blogger and cake fan, will spend the evening showing us how to make quick, easy, and inexpensive food gifts such as cakepops and bakeaway jars (intriguing) and we’ll be decorating our own cookies!… Yummilicious!

Don’t forget, we’ll be collecting for Trussell Trust Foodbank once again this month, so please continue with your fabulous generosity.  The Shopping List is here – Trussell Trust ShoppingList

We’re also only one week away from the official WI Centenary on Wednesday, 16 September 2015 – City WI will be donning our gladrags and chinking our glasses in a toast to WI members of the past, present and future at Riverbank Bar and Kitchen.  For only £10 per person, we will be celebrating in style with pizza and prosecco!  We’ll be taking payments from everyone who has already signed up and any other ladies who would like to join us, at our September meeting on Wednesday – please let us know you’re coming on our Facebook event page – *here*

Looking forward to spending some fabulous cakey and celebratory time with you this September! 🙂

March committee meeting

We had our very first committee meeting of City WI last night and I have to say it was really great. We discussed the upcoming March meeting (Wed 10 March, International Community Centre, Nottingham) and April meetings, committee roles and our plans for the future.  We’;re all passionate about the future of the cityWI and what we can achieve, it was really uplifting to be a part of it.

All i can say is watch this space for some very exciting things coming your way…
