Fabulous Florence

For our October meeting we welcomed the wonderful Sian from Nottingham Women’s History Group who shared some fascinating insights on local philanthropist and Boots boss Florence Boot.  Along with her husband Jesse, Florence helped shape the business and the lives of Boots workers. I certainly had no idea she was responsible for developing the look of the stores, introducing boots libraries and tea rooms as well as ensuring her employees had access to doctors, sports clubs, convalescence homes and holiday outings. A genuine pioneer and the first female company director, spending an hour in her company was a delight. A huge thanks to Sian for illuminating this incredible local woman for us.

Naturally we followed up the talk with some cake and chatter and bounced around some ideas for future meetings. Hopes are we can try some embroidery, perhaps some boozy tastings and maybe, just maybe this is the year we finally make jam!
